Our Spikenard (Jatamansi) oil is steam distilled from the sustainably harvested roots of the Nardostachys jatamansi plant that grows high in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal. Nardus plant produces small, delicate pink flowers and thrives in high altitudes, which is why it thrives so easily in the Himalayan mountains. Nardus essential oil has been prized for centuries, traditionally used to anoint people of high honor and in the Ayurvedic health practices of India.
For centuries, Nardus oil was considered a very valuable raw material and was treasured by the nobility through the ages. Nardus essential oil has been used for religious purposes in both the Old and New Testaments - Judaic priests burned nard as a form of frankincense and used it as an offering and in the Catholic Church, nard is used to represent Saint Joseph - Mary's husband. The Nardus plant is also very famous in the Indian subcontinent under the name Jatamansi and is widely used in herbal medicines.
