Gardenias [ Family: Rubiaceae ] are highly aromatic creamy-white summer flowers that grow in solitary or in small clusters. They have dark green and glossy leaves with a leathery texture and prominent veins. Native to China where they have been cultivated for thousands of years, Gardenias are fairly adaptable shrubs tolerant of sun or semi-shade, and do best in a well-drained, humus-rich soil. Due to its sweet and rich fragrance, the Gardenia is also referred to as the
White Angel.
Emotionally and energetically, Gardenia Absolute Oil is known to correct the menopausal imbalances that contribute to depression, insomnia, headache and nervous tension. It can also contribute to alleviating anxiety, irritability and situational depression.
What can I do with it as an aromatherapist?
Absolute oils are precious! You can dilute this essential oil as follows; Fill a vial (10 ml) with a carrier oil such as deodorized sesame oil. To this add a maximum of 3 to 5 drops of oil. Then give this composition at least a month to develop. After that, this composition is fine to use, drop by drop, in, for example, an inhaler stick or a massage oil.
Allergens: Linalol, Geraniol, Benzylbenzoaat en Eugenol (EU Cosmetics Regulation, 2003/15)
PERFUMERS INFORMATION
“The expensive, rich, warm, heady floral oil produced from the flowers is considered “osmically balanced” (as are Carnation and Lavender), which means that their floral compounds are perfectly balanced, containing a top, middle, and base note. For this reason, Gardenia is still enjoyed as a single-flower perfume.”
Fragrance profile:
TYPE: floral
PROPERTIES: rich, sweet, warm, aromatic
ADDITIONAL NOTES AND SHADES: Fruity, herbaceous, green, creamy, recalling peach skin.
Olfactory notes:
- Piquant because of the salicylate aspect.
- There is an unmistakably heady indolic element of jasmine.
- In ripe blooms, they have a sharp green ‘mushroom’ overtone.
- Gardenias also share some aspects with lily, lily of the valley, ylang ylang, and a bit of rose.
