CO2 Extracts

CO2-Extracts

CO2-extracts

CO2 extracts exhibit some of the characteristics of essential oils. Like essential oils, they contain many beneficial therapeutic properties. They are extracted with CO2 gas (carbon dioxide) under pressure at ambient temperature. Under normal atmospheric conditions, CO2 is a gas, but when highly compressed it becomes supercritical - neither a gas nor a liquid.

Supercritical CO2 is an excellent organic solvent used to extract essential oils from plants. The procedure is fast and careful and it is completely closed to avoid the presence of oxygen, thus preserving the composition of the chemical components. Highly volatile top notes are not lost, and the base notes of less volatile and sensitive oxygen-rich sesquiterpenes are also fully preserved. Hydrolysis of monoterpene esters or the loss of monoterpene alcohols in the heart notes is also largely avoided during extraction. Another impressive advantage of CO2 extraction is that once the oil is extracted from the plant material, the supercritical CO2 is returned to its gaseous state at normal air pressure, disappearing quickly and completely and without generating toxic waste! A very sustainable and environmentally friendly way of extraction. There are already statements in the 'aromatherapy world' that CO2 extraction is the future. The fact that many of the CO2 extracts have a significantly more pleasant smell than the distilled variety is an added bonus.

Depending on the applied pressure and temperature, 'select' or 'total' extract is created. Select extracts are obtained at lower pressures and are more similar to essential oils as they are fully mobile liquids with mostly volatile components making up the bulk of the extract. Total extracts are obtained by working at higher pressures and contain more lipophilic components of the plant with a higher molecular weight, they can be thicker or more waxy and resemble the whole plant more than just the essential oil fraction of the plant. Some CO2 total extracts are in fact carrier oils, for example Pomegranate CO2 and Rosehip seed or pulp CO2. But CO2 extracts are also obtained from well-known macerates, such as Calendula or St. John's Wort. Then in aromatherapy we also know the very vulnerable polyunsaturated fatty acid oils (MOV), which are very vulnerable and have a limited shelf life. How nice is it that there is also Evening Primrose CO2 and Wheat Bran CO2.

About Cinnamon
Cinnamon is one of the world's oldest spices. It is mentioned in the Bible under the name 'quesiah'.
The ancient Egyptians are known to use cinnamon to ward off epidemics.
Arab traders supplied the herb to the Greeks and Romans and tried to keep the herb's origin a secret. That worked for several centuries, but the Portuguese found cinnamon while discovering the new sailing route around the Cape to India and Ceylon in the 16th century.

Cinnamon oil production technology has changed little over history. The distillate is still obtained through the methods introduced by the early Dutch settlers who occupied Ceylon, present day Sri Lanka, until CO2 extraction was invented.

Properties:
Cinnamon extracts have antibacterial and antifungal properties. Warming and reassuring and has a vitalizing effect. A deliciously sweet extract reminiscent of grandmother's apple pie.

Application:
It has a warming effect on icy hands and feet, but also with colds and flu. Purifies the atmosphere and gives a homely "old-fashioned" atmosphere when evaporating. Can be used both internally (*) and externally.

The cinnamon extract can be used as a flavoring in chewing gum, confectionery, beverages and other foods, especially as a spice extract in baked goods.

Due to its aromatic taste, cinnamon extract is suitable as a fragrance in the perfume industry and other cosmetic products. The extract is often used in toothpaste or mouthwash.

(*) Caution is advised when taking in combination with anticoagulants!

Evening Primrose Seed CO2-total Extract

Latijnse naam: Oenothera biennis

Raw material : Seeds, dried
Porduction  : CO2 extractie
Certification : EcoCert Cosmos - Halal - Kosher
Origen : China
Composition  : 99,9 % Evening Primrose Seed CO2-total extract
: 0,1 % antioxidant extracts of Rosemary
INCI name OENOTHERA BIENNIS SEED EXTRACT
Edible : Yes
Frangrance : Characteristic smell
Color  : Yellow to green, clear oil
Content : 50 ml.
Brand : j’Olie et Co

About Evening Primrose:
The evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is native to North America and still grows in Europe
and parts of the Southern Hemisphere. Evening primrose has a long history in skin care. The original inhabitants of America already used it for bruises and for various skin problems, but also ate the roots.

Ingredients:
Fatty oil with a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including 65-78% linoleic acid (C18:2, omega 6), 9-13% gamma-linolenic acid (C18:3, omega6), extra oleic acid (C18:1, omega 9), palmitic acid and stearic acid.

Properties:
Evening primrose seed extract is an important source of essential fatty acids. The oil has a high concentration of linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This makes the extract very suitable as an ingredient in food supplements.

Application:
As a traditional herbal remedy, it is used for the symptomatic relief of itching in acute and chronic dry skin conditions. Can be used both internally (*) and externally.

Due to the high content of linoleic and linolenic acid, evening primrose seed oil is suitable as an ingredient in e.g., moisturizing creams, massage oils and other skin care products, especially in products for dry and irritated skin. Linoleic acid belongs to the essential unsaturated fatty acids and, as an essential component of ceramides, it is involved in maintaining a natural barrier that protects the skin from drying out.

(*) For internal use, first, and always consult an expert, and certified aromatherapist!

Why Evening Primrose CO2:
Evening primrose oil is an oil rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PFA). This makes the regular oil very susceptible to spoilage, and the oil quickly becomes rancid. The CO2 extract is considerably less susceptible to spoilage, moreover it is more concentrated. This makes Evening Primrose CO2 extract a sustainable investment.

Remark: None

About Marjoram
Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is a plant from the lip flower family. The species is also known as marjoram or sausage herb. Marjoram comes from the eastern Mediterranean. The plant has been known in Europe since ancient times. Marjoram has an intense aroma, reminiscent of oregano, but softer in taste and sweeter. The ancient Greeks used marjoram along with parsley as a hangover remedy. A wreath was made with it and placed on the head during the feast.

Ingredients:
The extract contains the bicyclic monoterpenes cis- and trans-sabine hydrate (30 - 60%), with trans-sabine hydrate present only in small amounts, the associated monoterpene ester sabine hydrate acetate (10 - 30%), sabinene and the monoterpene alcohol terpinen-4-ol. Unlike distillates, the labile sabine hydrates and sabine hydrate acetate are obtained in full quantity thanks to the gentle conditions of the CO2 extraction.

Properties:
Marjoram is used as a traditional herbal remedy to relieve mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as flatulence and to treat irritated skin around the nose. The herb is also commonly used for headaches, dizziness, spasmodic cough, and colds.

The marjoram extract can be used as an herbal extract in many different foods, especially the extract goes well with sausage or meat products. Due to its antioxidant effect, the extract can also extend the shelf life of fats and oils.

The marjoram extract can be used as a fragrance in cosmetic products and perfumes because of its spicy fragrance. It also has a calming and refreshing effect.

About Pomegranate
The pomegranate (Punica granatum) is both the one- to six-meter-tall shrub with long, thorny branches, and the fruit of this one. The plant belongs to the loosestrife family (Lythraceae) or the Punicaceae family.
Originally from Persia (today: Iran), pomegranates have been cultivated for centuries around the Mediterranean, Middle East, Afghanistan, India, and the Caucasus. The shrub's genus name, Punica, is a reminder of the Phoenicians, who spread its cultivation, partly for religious reasons. Granatum comes from the Latin word for grain, granum. The gemstone garnet is probably named after the pomegranate, not only because of the color, but also because of the shape of the cells, which resemble gemstones.

Keratinocytes are part of the epidermis, the top layer of skin, and form keratin, which protects the skin and gives it stability, it has a firming effect. Therefore, the pomegranate seed extract is suitable for all skin care products, especially for anti-aging skin creams, massage oils or hand creams. The oil counteracts premature skin aging such as wrinkles in a natural way.

About Seabuckthorn
The seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a dioecious shrub: there are male and female plants. The plant takes root both horizontally and vertically. In the Netherlands, the plant (Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. rhamnoides) occurs naturally mainly in open, calcareous dunes. The sea buckthorn is a xerophyte; The species is also very resistant to salt and the dust from the sand. In Central Asia (Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. carpatica) the plant grows in desert environments, in the Alps (Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. fluviatilis) in open country and on riverbanks.

The berries are acidic and rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, flavonoids, plant sterols, lignans and minerals. The berry is rich in oil both in the seeds (seed oil) and in the soft parts of the fruit (pulp oil). The pulp contains between three and five percent oil. The seeds contain about 10% oil, while the oil content in the soft parts varies over a much wider range (0.5 to 10%), depending largely on the origin and varieties.

Seabuckthorn oil can be extracted from the seeds or pulp of the fruit of the sea buckthorn. Oils from seabuckthorn seeds and pulp differ significantly in fatty acid composition. While linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid are the main fatty acids in the seed oil, oil from the pulp of seabuckthorn contains a total of about 65% of the monounsaturated fatty acid palmitoleic acid (an omega-7 fatty acid) and the saturated fatty acid palmitic acid combined. Few other vegetable oils contain a similar amount of these fatty acids. Both the seed and pulp oils are rich in tocopherols, tocotrienols and plant sterols. In addition, the pulp oil contains especially high levels of carotene and carotenoids

Ingredients:
Fatty oil with 20-30% palmitic acid (C16:0), 28-38% palmitoleic acid (C16:1w7), 10-20% oleic acid (C18:1w9), >6% vaccine acid (C18:1w7), linoleic acid (C18 :2w6), alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3 w3) and unsaponifiable ingredients such as carotenoids, alkanols, tocopherols, sterols.

Properties:
The seabuckthorn extract contains the rare palmitoleic acid, which is also a component of the skin fat and stimulates regenerative processes in the epidermis and promotes the healing of wounds. Therefore, seabuckthorn extract can help to activate skin regeneration and minimize scarring. The other unsaturated fatty acids in the extract increase the moisture content of the skin. In addition, seabuckthorn oil has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The extract is therefore particularly suitable for use in anti-aging products, skin care products, especially for dry and chapped skin, products against skin impurities and nourishing soaps. Sea buckthorn can also be used in sunscreens and aftersun products. In addition, seabuckthorn oil strengthens the hair, which is why it is also used in shampoos, conditioners and other hair products aimed at repairing damaged hair.

Application:
Seabuckthorn oil promotes wound healing and has an analgesic effect, which is why it has traditionally been used in Russia for skin damage caused by high-energy radiation (e.g. sunlight). It is also used for burns and to treat necrotic wounds and stomach ulcers. Internal applications of seabuckthorn oil lower cholesterol levels in the blood and can thus prevent cardiovascular diseases. In folk medicine, the oil is used to relieve the symptoms of chronic stomach ulcers and other stomach ailments.

The extract can be used to flavor fruit and vegetable preparations, juices, other drinks, and foods. Seabuckthorn is also used in salad dressings.

In food supplements, seabuckthorn extract is suitable for regulating the fat metabolism in case of a deficiency of essential fatty acids due to the high content of unsaturated fatty acids. The alpha-linolenic acid in the extract also contributes to the maintenance of normal cholesterol levels in the blood. Most used in dilution (1-50%) and added to a neutral, added to neutral products, for oral and wound care.
