May Chang essential oil is steam distilled from the ripe berries of the short Litsea cubeba evergreen tree, which grows wild in certain parts of India. Also known as mountain pepper, exotic verbena, and tropical verbena, the Litsea cubeba tree is known for its fragrant flowers and leaves, and small berries shaped like peppers. Litsea Cubeba Essential Oil has a powerful, clean, fresh, sweet green, lemony aroma with light woody and floral undertones.
Litsea Cubeba Oil is characterized by its high Citral content (up to 82%), which accounts for the dominant lemony aroma. The aroma is often compared to lemongrass, although it is considered by many to be finer and may be the better choice from a purely aromatic standpoint.

Bright, lemony, and energetic, May Chang is best known for its usefulness on skin problems. The properties of this essential oil make it an excellent choice in facial toners for acne treatment and general skin rejuvenation, when used in a low dilution because it is rich in aldehydes. Litsea Cubeba Essential Oil is also helpful in supporting healthy lung and airway activity, especially with regard to unwanted congestion. This essential oil is helpful in reducing the presence of uninvited bacterial, viral, and fungal activity. Its powerful aroma is also used as an inhalant to combat seasonal ailments. It replaces synthetic citral in many fragrances.
May Chang Oil has uplifting properties and has a strong effect on promoting mental and physical well-being. In Chinese medicine, this essential oil is useful to relieve the symptoms associated with women's monthly cycles and to support the relief of muscle tension and inflammation, such as tendinitis that requires removal of heat.

Contraindications: Litsea is non-toxic, non-irritating, but may be sensitizing to some people. Most people respond well to Litsea oil, but some people may get allergic (skin) reactions to it. Be careful with people with hypersensitive, diseased, or damaged skin, and with children who are less than two years old. It is important to never use Litsea undiluted.
